Hira Mian, MD, MSc, FRCPC is an Associate Professor in the Department of Oncology at McMaster University, specializing in malignant hematology with a focus on multiple myeloma. She is a full-time member of the Escarpment Cancer Research Institute and an associate member of the Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact program within the Faculty of Health Sciences.
Dr. Mian earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from McMaster University before completing residency training in internal medicine at the University of Toronto and hematology at McMaster University. She further pursued a Malignant Hematology Fellowship and obtained a Master of Science in Health Research Methodology at McMaster. She joined the faculty in 2018 as an Assistant Professor and Clinician Educator and was promoted to Associate Professor with CAWAR in 2024.
Her research program focuses on advancing cancer therapeutics, particularly in multiple myeloma, through clinical trials, translational research, and health services outcomes research. Since joining McMaster, she has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications, with half as first or senior author. Over the past five years, she has secured 12 research grants totaling $12 million, including nine as Principal or Co-Principal Investigator. Her work has fostered extensive national and international research collaborations, furthering her goal of establishing a leading academic program in multiple myeloma research.
Dr. Mian’s contributions to oncology research and education have earned her multiple honors. She has received the Hamilton Health Sciences Early Career Award and the Vice President Research Award for Outstanding Service – Rising Star. Nationally, she was recognized with the 2024 CCTG Dr. Ralph Meyer Phase II Program Young Investigator Award, and internationally, she was awarded the American Society of Hematology Clinical Research Training Award.
Through her dedication to clinical research and education, Dr. Mian continues to shape the field of multiple myeloma treatment and patient care. She joined the Blood Cancers Today editorial board in 2025 as an Associate Editor.
