A New Year, a New Publication

By Sagar Lonial, MD, FACP - Last Updated: January 21, 2022

The pace of change in blood cancers is quite dramatic, and new paradigms of treatment, assessment, and pathogenesis occur seemingly every year. While all these advancements have been of tremendous benefit to patients, they can be hard to keep track of in a busy everyday practice. Practitioners and researchers alike face a steep learning curve in staying informed about these updates. Add in additional complexity of virtual meetings and the realities of 2 years of COVID fatigue and the task seems even more daunting. Yet progress marches on, and the need to put all that new information in a rapidly accessible and assessable format becomes paramount.

Amid this challenging set of circumstances, I welcome you to the first edition of Blood Cancers Today—an official publication of the Society of Hematologic Oncology (SOHO). Every month, we’ll be bringing our readers news, education, and cutting-edge research from the hematologic oncology field.

As the only worldwide society dedicated specifically to hematologic malignancies, SOHO stands in a unique position to fulfill this need. The goal of Blood Cancers Today is to connect this important global audience, reporting on multi-country clinical trials and worldwide trends in hematologic oncology.

I am joined in this endeavor by the experts serving on our Editorial Board. Our founding Associate Editors were selected for their expertise as well as their shared passion for conducting and disseminating research to improve the lives of patients diagnosed with hematologic malignancies. The Associate Editors will help guide the content of the publication, sharing unique insights into the latest developments in their respective specialties.

Each month’s issue of Blood Cancers Today will bring you in-depth In Focus features exploring hematologic oncology subjects, summaries of and perspectives on recently published peer-reviewed articles, and Point | Counterpoint articles covering the many emerging clinical scenarios in the face of new treatments and diagnostic technology. The publication is designed for the entire hematologic oncology universe, so we will also be hearing from our nursing and pharmacist colleagues and fellows and trainees. We will draw on SOHO’s resources to share Case Studies presented at the SOHO Annual Meeting—or submitted by readers—and recaps of the popular State of the Art & Next Questions article series from Clinical Lymphoma, Myeloma & Leukemia.

The impact of Blood Cancers Today extends beyond the pages of the print magazine delivered to readers’ mailboxes each month. We’ll be continuing the conversations on bloodcancerstoday.com, the online home of the publication. The Web site will be updated daily with news from specialty and general healthcare, the latest news from major medical meetings, and more.

Bloodcancerstoday.com will also host video interviews with experts and innovators, including roundtables and panel discussions about the issues affecting our practice. Visit our Multimedia page to watch our interviews with researchers who presented late-breaking data at the 2021 American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting.

I’m excited to be a part of this new publication and to hear from our readers. Blood Cancers Today was created for you—we welcome your feedback at editor@bloodcancerstoday.com.
