The meeting, held in Houston, Texas, from September 6 through 9, 2023, brings clinicians and researchers together for a focused and comprehensive overview of the latest research in hematologic oncology.

“As a society we are a dedicated group of academicians, clinicians, research scientists and related specialists who are committed to advancing efforts in research and treatment,” Dr. Brown said. “We accomplish part of this mission through the exchange of scientific information. We believe that every member of the Society plays a valuable role in reaching this goal.”

Dr. Brown spoke about how the annual meeting has “grown considerably over time,” noting that the meeting “has more attendees this year than any other year since it was established in 2012.”

She also discussed why selected personalized medicine as the theme for this year’s meeting.

“As our understanding becomes better of the underlying mechanisms of these malignancies, we improve our ability to predict which treatments will work best for specific patients,” Dr. Brown said. “Over the course of the meeting this week, we will hear a great deal of new data in the field … The ultimate goal of personalized therapy is to improve outcomes by designing patient-specific plans rather than one size fits all.”

The meeting will feature numerous sessions and presentations over the coming days, she said.

“We will have 180 presentations over three and a half days during the meeting this week,” Dr. Brown said. “In total there are more than 150 speakers presenting at 14 general sessions covering leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related malignancies.”

She highlighted the SOHO 2023 mobile app, which allows attendees to access content, ask questions during sessions, answer polls, and more. For those who might want to revisit a session or watch one that they missed, the hybrid meeting format allows meeting attendees to access the meeting content online for an entire year.

For those who want to continue learning about the latest research and interact with fellow professionals, Dr. Brown highlighted SOHO’s monthly publication, Blood Cancers Today, as well as SOHO’s partnership with DocMatter, a global medical community platform that SOHO members can use for in-depth clinical conversations. Dr. Brown also highlighted the SOHO Ambassador Program.

“In an effort to increase geographical diversity and promote international understanding among hematologic oncology experts from different parts of the world, SOHO created the SOHO Ambassador Program,” she said. “Each member of the program acts as an ambassador for the society in their respective country.”
