A group of first- through third-year fellows participated together in a panel on fellowship during “The HemOnc Pulse” 2024 Live Meeting in Chicago, Illinois on May 3-4.
After the panel, Himachandana Atluri, MD, of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, spoke with host, Chadi Nabhan, MD, MBA, FACP, about the panel, her own fellowship journey, and accepting a faculty member position at Northwestern University.
Dr. Nabhan first asked Dr. Atluri what participating in the panel offered her as a graduating fellow.
“I think it’s always a really great opportunity to meet different faculty from all other the country and get to interact with them,” Dr. Atluri noted. “It was an opportunity to meet other fellows … and share how our paths have been different and how we landed on our final decision for a faculty position.”
In addition to describing what fellows experience in current-day fellowship programs, Dr. Atluri and other graduating fellows on the panel discussed some of the challenges they have faced while finding a job.
In her experience, “there are a lot of mixed resources out there, so identify other people that have had similar experiences as you and find aspects of their job search that are important for you and use that to shape your job search.”
Dr. Nabhan also asked about the potential value of social media for fellows.
“Honestly, [Twitter/X] is a really great source for me to keep up with the literature because there is so much new data being produced,” Dr. Atluri commented.
